On the Side

thought you should know...

  • Now, I'm no neat freak but I do feel strongly about proper hygiene. So this morning while having a lively banter with my coworkers it was brought up that one of them spotted Cynthia Nixon (Miranda from Sex and the City) at Tequila Sunrise (corner of Steinway and Northern Blvd. Read on...
  • My darlings, I have to apologize for the silence here yesterday. We were too busy having tickle fights and drinking banana daiquiris. And I think we fell into a non-leap year worm hole, bending the fabric of space an time. Not to worry, all is well at GS Central. Now, Read on...

Meme What If…?

wolftrapIt's fun to imagine sometimes those what if… moments in life. I wouldn't call them regrets, just two equally viable options with vastly different outcomes. Like, what if I had stayed in Italy and married Luca? I like to think I'd be a miserable Italian housewife, wearing an apron and screaming something along the lines of, "Ma che cazzo stai facendo? Che scemo che sei!". Who knows though, maybe I'd be as happy as a pig in mud. Or what if I had not moved to New York? Would I be happy in California because I'd have all my friends nearby? Probably. Would I be miserable because even though we all live in the same town we never see each other and I gave up living in New York for this? Definately.

I have one What If moment that I can't for the life of me imagine what the outcome would've been…

You see, back in 1982 at the tender age of 12, I was facing just such a fork in the road. I was a swimmer. A competition swimmer. Okay, okay I was a f***ing Water Ballerina (that was before they started calling it Synchronized Swimming). I trained 4+ days a week at swimming pool down on Pico. This was no sissy sport, if that's what you're thinking. I worked hard. Then one day they announced that Sychronized Swimming would be added to the Olympics. I was too young for the 1984 Olympics but my trainer felt I could be ready for the 1988 Olympics. Faced with these options and knowing how rigorous my training would've been I told my mom and my trainer that I just wanted to be a normal kid, like everyone else (you know, smoking ciggies behind the gym and making out with boys).

Now, what if?

My life would've been drastically different. I might have been the Mary Lou Retton of swimming. Winning silvers and golds. Signing a recording contract and becoming a spokesmodel for Adidas. Or maybe I would've trained my ass off and never made it to the Olympic Team, become an alcoholic, married some guy name Luke, wore an apron while screaming things like, "What the f**k are you doing? You're such an idiot!"

    • I’m not sure about option #2, I’ve never heard of any famous synchronized swimmers, but having lived in Italy as well, I can guarantee you option #1 would have ended with you at home making dinner while he and his friends went out to a restaurant, split a bottle of wine and a single order of fries, and catcalled every woman in sight until 2AM.

      You done good.

    • You never know where you end up. You could have also joined Italy’s synchronized swimming team, become an Italian media star, given the nickname La Meme, and had an affair with Berlusconi.

    • Or you’d be teaching Sychronized Swimming out in the suburbs to a bunch of anorexic pre-teens.

But what if you moved back to California??

    • JJ, yeah and don’t forget about having to deal with La Suocera, that’s enough to make you run screaming to Malpensa!

Neil, then I would’ve recorded a hit italian pop song and run for parliment!

Casey, not a chance! On the other hand…don’t you hear NY calling your name?

    • I always wanted to be a syncronized swimmer ever since I saw that sketch on SNL with Martin Short.

I just wanted to be better looking and less retarded looking.
