On the Side

thought you should know...

  • Now, I'm no neat freak but I do feel strongly about proper hygiene. So this morning while having a lively banter with my coworkers it was brought up that one of them spotted Cynthia Nixon (Miranda from Sex and the City) at Tequila Sunrise (corner of Steinway and Northern Blvd. Read on...
  • My darlings, I have to apologize for the silence here yesterday. We were too busy having tickle fights and drinking banana daiquiris. And I think we fell into a non-leap year worm hole, bending the fabric of space an time. Not to worry, all is well at GS Central. Now, Read on...

dancing hersheyDo you remember when you were young and marketing was an afterthought? Nowadays we are marketed to even before products exist. Branding is the 21st century buzz-word. Products take on an aura, they become superorganic, the represent all that is good and right. And if you buy that product you will be automatically infused with all the same qualities. Or so they want you to believe.

I don't know about you, but I yearn for the days of yore when marketing was more geared toward selling you a product and not recruiting you into their cult of identity. Remember collecting bottle caps or stamps or cereal box tops? Sometimes you even got something worthwhile. So when I was watching TV last week and I saw the latest Hershey's campaign I was beside myself. Personally my candy of choice is Peanut M&Ms (Mars Inc.) but not this week. Yes sir, this week I have gone off the deep end buying confections from those lovely folks in Hershey Pennsylvania. It's a simple yet effective concept. HERSHEYS You buy 15 candy bars, pay shipping and handling, and you've got yourself a t-shirt. When other people see you wearing your t-shirt they will crave chocolate and hopefully, if all goes according to plan, buy Hershey's. And since in order to participate I am subjected to eating outside my candy clique, Hershey's is hoping to bring me over to their side. This past week I have eaten: 2 Kit Kats, 4 Reese's Pieces, 1 Take Five, 2 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, 2 Almond Joys, and 1 Hershey's Special Dark. I only have 3 more candy bars to go and I think I might accomplish this feat during my lunch break today.

I'm not sure if I've been swayed to the Hershey's side. None of the above mentioned candy bars had that je ne sais quoi that Peanut M&Ms have. But hell, I'll wear the T-shirt.

My only problem now is that I can't decide which T-shirt to choose. Which one will look cool and still help me retain my sex-appeal?

  • I have gone through this with you before, meme.

If you want your “assets” to look the best, you don’t get ones that have words going across the middle of the shirt. You go for the York Peppermint Patty one or the KitKat one because they’re more a full image on the whole chest area, versus the ones that are horizontal words which may make you look less “big” no matter your size.

There you go. My three cents.

  • I just want to get this straight before trying to help: you ate fifteen candy bars in order to get a tee shirt for which you have to pay shipping and handling? A tee shirt? Meme, I believe you’re pulling our collective leg.

Oh, wait. It’s a “vintage” tee shirt. No, I still don’t believe it.

  • Thanks Pauly! You’re always looking out for me.

JJ - I would’ve eaten the same amount of chocolate in the same period of time, so why not get rewarded for my efforts, right? Oh man, I think there’s something seriously wrong with me.

  • I was just rustlin’ yer feathers. I remember trying to sell enough packets of flower seeds to get the big prize and never selling enough for more than free packets of seeds. At least this way you’re guaranteed to win, yeah?

  • I’d rather eat 15 shirts and get a free candy bar.

    That would surely catch on.

  • Justin: If you can do that I’ve got a candy bar for you (minus the wrapper, though).

JJ: You’re always a winner in my blog!

  • Holy Moly! I had no idea!

I just cleaned out my desk and tossed a half a dozen wrappers yesterday!

No biggie, I’ll buy some more.

I have two long sleeved tees I got for a similar deal back in the mid-nineties. They were grey and brown strips with the hershey print logo on them. Ultra hip.

  • I’ve never had a Take Five bar before. Is it any good?

  • Cybele: when you get your shirt send me a pic!

Will: Frankly, I can’t remember. I’m sure it had chocolate in it, and I think peanuts, and something crunchy…
