I'm a big fan of this food craze everyone's doing. You'll never catch me not eating, or pushing my plate away, or ordering a salad on a date. I go for it, with gusto. Nicole Ritchie?!…not at my dinner table.
So tonight is the last night my folks are in town and I'm taking them to a place that serves one of my most favoritest food in the world: Gnocco Fritto. To avoid embarassment on your part or make you feel less than worldly I will explain what it is. Gnocco Fritto is deep fried dough-licious pillow-like thingys. They are traditional food from the Modena area of Italy (where balsamic vinegar comes from…and some freaky pickled pigs feet, bleh) and are best with a dry Lambrusco. You don't just eat the bread thingamajiggers, what you do is use them as a launching pad for gastronomical delight.
When you order Gnocco Fritto you will also get a plate full of de-licious meats and cheeses. Basically this is finger food, you grab a bread-pillow and a piece of meat or cheese or meat and cheese, mush them together and shoove it all ever so delicately in your mouth. This continues until you finished multiple plates of meat and cheese and multiple bottles of the yummy sparkly red wine. They also usually serve a small tub of lard substance but you won't be offending anyone if you pass on it.
.
It's not over yet. The grand finale….
Gnocco slathered with Nutella, oh Nutella, how I love you so. Just to prove my point, I came across the following pictures of happy people eating Gnocco Fritto. Those are some damn happy people…just as I will be in a few short hours.
Fuck, I can't write anymore I'm too damn hungry.

Mmmmmmmmmm.
Where can you get that in Los Angeles? Or do I have to wait to come to New York and let you take me out on a date?
Full blooded Italian and I’ve never had this. I’ve had homemade gnocchi, but not this.
I absolutely love gnocchi, but I’ve never heard of it being deep-fried or being served with anything other than a good bolognese or pesto sauce. This sounds like something you’d find at a county fair, where apparently the new craze is to deep-fry anything and serve it to the masses. The delicacy at this year’s L.A. County Fair: Deep-fried avocado. Bleah.
gnocco and gnocchi are completely different…common misnomer. gnocchi is dumplings, usually made with potatoes. gnocco is deep fried bread…mmmm. i did a cursory search in LA for them and saw that they were listed on Drago’s appetizer menu.
Drago’s is right down the street from me… sadly it’s also fairly expensive, so I’ve only been once, and I wasn’t blown away enough for me to go back repeatedly. However, if you watch Entourage, Drago is the restaurant where Vince had his first reunion dinner with Mandy Moore. It was time again for me to recognize it and scream at the TV, “Hey, I’ve been there! I know where that is! It’s just a couple of blocks away!” to absolutely no one in particular because I was watching alone.
