It was fall semester of my senior year. I was living in a huge farmhouse right by campus with 3 of my best friends and the best summer ever had just ended.
I had started working at the beginning of the summer at an entertainment events company and at the start of the fall I my history class when I got a call from my boss at the DJ company. She wanted to know if I could step in and start DJing the karaoke night that we did at this bar in downtown Athens, GA called Firehouse.
Let me mention now that I LOVE AND ADORE KARAOKE!!
I have always loved karaoke. And this woman was offering me MONEY to do KARAOKE.
Awesome.
I was super nervous but the bartender, a very hot man named Charlie, kept plying me with pint glasses full of vodka and a bit of tonic. So an hour into it, I was happy and drunk and singing and having a great time.
That's when these hot guys walked in. I noticed Ryan and he noticed me. He was so hot that I never even entertained the thought that he would come and talk to me first. But that's just what he did. He and his friends were in a band and passing through town on their way to Chapel Hill, NC. They'd heard that Athens was a cool spot and stopped in to have a good time. He gave me their demo and the lead singer sang some karaoke and he had a cool interesting voice but I wasn't blown away. I'd never heard of them and everyone in my college town was in a band so I wasn't impressed. But he was fine and I'd already made up my mind that he'd be coming back to my place that night.
So after I was done with karaoke night and packing up my equipment he came over to me and I took a chance and asked, "What are you doing after this?"
He said, "Nothing."
I said, "How about coming home with me?"
And he did.
I learned that he was on tour from California and that his dad was half Mexican and Catholic and his mom was an Eastern European Jew. The combination equals Fucking Hot. So we get back to my place and I have him wait half in hour in my room for me because I wanted to take a shower. That's right–I gave him a photo album of fun spring break pics and told him I had a cable modem if he wanted to use the internet and I took a shower because I felt sweaty from my first night as a karaoke DJ and hot guy magnet.
Well everyone knows what happened when I got out of the shower so yada, yada. yada, it was the next morning and the only thing I had to do that day was baby-sit at three.
It was the perfect one night stand. We yada yada'd again in the morning and then I made breakfast for him and my roommate Caroline who clearly could not believe that such a hot guy was sharing a meal with us in our pajamas. My friend Katie called to say that she had smooched the lead singer the night before.
"Oh yeah? I just made the drummer scrambled eggs." I replied.
I dropped him off at his hotel. They were heading out later that afternoon. He asked for my number and kissed me goodbye. And then we parted.
We talked a couple of times on the phone, and I saw his band play a couple of weeks later when they came back to town. I took a lot of pictures. I liked the demo CD he gave me so I decided to get the real album. After searching four different music stores, I found it and got my friends hooked on it too. Then I got a real boyfriend and I kind of forgot about the drummer. Until one day when I lost my phone at a gas station. When I called my mom to tell her she said not to worry about it because we were switching service providers and I was getting a new cell phone and a new number. So I lost every number I had in that phone including the only way I ever had of getting in touch with him.
A month later I was up late writing a paper and one of those digital MTV stations that actually show videos was on and I heard the first track from the album come on the TV.
I looked up from my computer and there is the man who'd shared my bed drumming away in a music video.
That's how I found out that Maroon 5 was a real band.
Today I was poking around on YouTube and found this. It's a tribute to the drummer who shared my bed all those years ago in Athens, Georgia. I can't even believe this exists and I laughed for like ten minutes straight after I watched it.
And that's my quasi-celeb makeout story that I will never be able to sell for money to the tabloids because Ryan's not the drummer anymore.
C'est la vie.
